    Sleep is a very important aspect for maintaining mental and physical health. Most people require eight hours a night to function properly the next day. However as we get older those sleep requirements are harder to attain as we perform less physical and mental activities. There are many reasons why insomnia occurs which can be due to medical conditions or from particular medications.

    One of the main causes of insomnia is due to psychological reasons as the person may be suffering from depression, anxiety or stress. Often people who suffer from insomnia become worked up before going to sleep out of anxiety of not getting enough sleep.

    If this is the case many products may help to get off to sleep like valerian, st john’s wort or melatonin. It would also be advisable to avoid products which may boost energy before going to bed like chocolate or products which are high in sugar or caffeine. You could also try winding down before bedtime by reading, or having a warm shower to help you relax before getting into bed.

    Valerian helping you to get off to sleep

    Valerian is a common herb which is indigenous to England.  This particular herb has been found to help alleviate insomnia and improves the quality of sleep.  Valerian also helps by reducing the amount of time taken to fall asleep (sleep latency).  Many (but not all) people find that valerian is an effective, mild sleep aid that permits them to fall asleep faster and to obtain a better night’s sleep without any early-morning drowsiness the following morning.

     

    Muscle cramps are another reason why so many people find it hard to get off to sleep, it seems as soon as they are ready to drift of to sleep they may get a cramp in the legs or a quick spasm which gives them a shock.  The quick spasms in the legs whilst at rest are often known as restless legs which are due to inadequate amounts of calcium and magnesium in the diet.  Otherwise valerian is very effective in reducing muscle cramps and spasm due to its sedative effects on the nerves and muscles.


    HEALTHY BITES
    Almond and Fig Torte with Mango and Tropical Sorbet

    (Serves 6)

    Sorbet is a great alternative to ice cream. Ice cream contains a far greater amount of fat than sorbet. If you haven’t tried sorbet this recipe will give you a great excuse to try a healthier desert that is full of flavour.

    Torte

    • 1/4 cup carob powder
    • 1 cup apricots
    • 1 cup dried dates
    • ½ cup shelled whole almonds
    • 1 cup best quality dried figs
    • 1 teaspoon orange zest
    • ½ tablespoon orange juice
    • 2 litres low fat sorbet/ice-cream

    (2 different flavours, 1 litre of each)

    • 1 ½ punnets blueberries, frozen

    Garnish

    • Tropical fruit
    • Mango coulis

    (Blend 1 mango and ½ cup orange juice until smooth)

    • Mint leaves

    Method:

    1. Blend almonds, apricots, figs and dates in a food processor until resembling rough breadcrumbs. Add zest, orange juice and carob and blend for a further minute.
    2. Remove and place mixture between 2 pieces of greaseproof paper approximately 40cm x 40cm.
    3. Using a rolling pin, roll the mixture to a 2mm thickness.
    4. Remove the top sheet of baking paper and cut 2 discs to the diameter of the spring-form tin you are using.

    To Assemble:

    Cut a piece of greaseproof paper to cover the bottom of the spring-form tin. This dessert is made upside down in the tin. Firstly, lightly cover the bottom with frozen blueberries, then spoon 1 litre tub of slightly soft sorbet on top of the berries, add one disc of fruit and nut mixture on top of the sorbet and freeze for 1 hour to firm up the sorbet. Repeat sorbet, the fruit and nut disc and freeze for 4 hours. Remove from mould and turn up the right way. Garnish with mango coulis, tropical fruits and mint leaves
