The Importance of Stroke Prevention

Many people have heard of someone they know suffering from a stroke, and they know what a devastating effect it can have on the person and those around them.

There are a two types of stokes that can occur and these can be classed as either a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) or a transient ischemic attack (TIA). Depending on which one a person suffers from can greatly determine their recovery and the level of damage which is sustained. A cerebrovascular accident occurs when the blood circulation to the brain has been blocked which causes the brain tissue to die due to lack of oxygenation and nutrients being supplied to the area. This blockage is often a result of a blood clot which has been lodged. Often those who survive a stroke are left with paralysis to one side of their body and can suffer a loss of ability of speech or language. Through intense rehabilitation some people can create new neural pathways to reverse some of the damage caused during the stroke. The transient ischemic attacks on the other hand do not cause the same level of damage which is caused from a CVA.

Often when people suffer from a TIA the episode will only last for 5-60 mins and during this time they may suffer from paralysis, numbness or loss of speech. People who suffer from a TIA can usually regain all of their normal function however it is a strong warning that they are a risk of suffering from a CVA if they don’t make changes to reduce their risk. We can make many changes in our lifestyle to help reduce the risk of suffering from a stroke. The major risk factor for suffering from a CVA or TIA can be greatly increased if the person is suffering from arteriosclerosis which is the narrowing of blood vessels. Obviously the narrower the blood vessels the more likely a blood clot could become lodged so we need to prevent the incidence of arteriosclerosis from occurring. This can be achieved in a number of ways.  Regular exercise will help reduce your risk by strengthening blood vessels and improving overall circulation and blood pressure. Prevent the usage of substances which can increase your risk like tobacco, excess coffee (more than three a day), alcohol (more than two a day), and excess fat in diet.

The maintenance of vital nutrients or usage of herbs can also decrease your risk of suffering from a stroke. Magnesium can be very beneficial in preventing stokes and a range of herbs can also be beneficial like cat’s claw, fish oils, grape seed extract and co-enzyme Q10.

Changes to improve your lifestyle and overall health can greatly reduce the incidence of you suffering from this devastating and debilitating disorder. Maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise and eating a well balanced meal will not only prevent this from happening to you but reduce your risk of suffering from a range of other problems which can be caused through neglecting your health.

Questions & Answers
What type of herb can help reduce varicose veins?

Horse chestnut can alleviate varicose veins as it contains a constituent called escin that can reduce the permeability of veins and increases their resistance. A clinical trial using horse chestnut on varicose veins patients recently demonstrated its ability to improve the condition of varicose veins patients. Other studies have demonstrated the ability of horse chestnut to decrease lower leg volume (swelling), leg pain, itching and fatigue in chronic venous insufficiency (a primary underlying cause of varicose veins) cases. The usual beneficial dose for horse chestnut is between 500 - 900mg of horse chestnut seed extract.
